Baby Development Guide: Physical, Cognitive, Language, and Social Development Checklist by Age
Importance of Early Childhood Development
Ages 0-36 months are a critical period of rapid growth and development. Physical development (gross motor, fine motor), cognitive development (thinking, problem-solving), language development (comprehension, expression), and social development (attachment, peer relationships) should be balanced.
Key Development Milestones by Age
- 2 months: Smiling, head lifting, babbling begins
- 4 months: Rolling over, grasping objects, laughing
- 6 months: Sitting alone, starting solids
- 9 months: Crawling, peek-a-boo, stranger anxiety
- 12 months: Standing alone, first words, holding cup
- 18 months: Walking alone, two-word phrases, understanding simple instructions
- 24 months: Running, three-word phrases or more, starting potty training
- 36 months: Tricycle, long sentences, peer play
Early Detection of Development Delay
Development delay refers to being 25% or more behind peers, and early detection and intervention are important. Receive development screening at infant health checkups (4, 9, 18, 30, 42, 54, 66 months), and if suspected, pediatric neurology or rehabilitation medicine consultation is needed.
