Pregnancy Weight Gain Calculator: Pre-pregnancy BMI-based Recommended Weight Guide
Importance of Weight Management During Pregnancy
Appropriate weight gain during pregnancy is important for both the mother and baby's health. Insufficient weight gain increases the risk of low birth weight and premature birth, while excessive gain increases the risk of gestational diabetes, preeclampsia, macrosomia, and difficult delivery.
Recommended Weight Gain by Pre-pregnancy BMI
- Underweight (BMI less than 18.5): 12.5-18kg gain
- Normal (BMI 18.5-22.9): 11.5-16kg gain
- Overweight (BMI 23-24.9): 7-11.5kg gain
- Obese (BMI 25 or higher): 5-9kg gain
- Twin pregnancy: 16.8-24.5kg gain based on normal BMI
Weight Gain Pattern by Period
During the 1st trimester (1-13 weeks), 1-2kg gain or no weight change due to morning sickness is normal. From the 2nd trimester (14-27 weeks), weight gain begins in earnest with approximately 0.3-0.5kg per week being appropriate. In the 3rd trimester (28-40 weeks), weight gain accelerates due to rapid fetal growth.
Healthy Pregnancy Weight Management
Additional 300-500 calories per day (after 2nd trimester), balanced nutrition, pregnancy exercise (walking, swimming), salt restriction, sufficient water intake, avoiding processed foods, and weekly weight measurement are recommended. Excessive dieting or overeating should be avoided, and it is important to follow your obstetrician's advice.
